PRESS RELEASE:
August 23, 2004 Pressco Technology Inc. has received official notification that its patent submission titled "Apparatus and Method for Providing Spatially-Selective On-Line Mass or Volume Measurements of Manufactured Articles" has been approved by the United States Patent Office. Current quality control techniques involve periodically sectioning and individually weighing the neck, sidewall, and/or base of a few sample containers to verify proper distribution of material. By the time an out-of-tolerance condition is discovered, several thousand defective bottles may have been manufactured, often requiring expensive, manual sorting methods to find and remove defective containers. By taking advantage of this new technology, manufacturers can now measure the material distribution on-line, so that the quality of every PET container is verified. Out-of-tolerance conditions are identified instantly and corrective action can be taken immediately, thus preventing costly spoilage and improving the quality of containers shipped to customers. According to the patent, corrective action can be manual, semi-automatic, or fully automated, which can contribute substantially to increased production uptime and a more tightly controlled blowing process. Sensing modules can be integrated inside stretch blowmolding systems or on external material handling equipment. When combined with Pressco’s patented correlation feature, the product provides a powerful tool for troubleshooting manufacturing process problems. Defective containers can be easily traced to a particular mold cavity, infeed/outfeed transfer arm, or spindle, thus reducing blowmolder downtime. Pressco is marketing this new technology under the product name INTELLIMASS™, which is available as a standalone system or as an upgrade to existing INTELLISPEC™ Vision Inspection Systems. In keeping with its long history of developing new technologies to help customers solve manufacturing problems, Pressco now has over 20 U.S. and International patents issued – plus several more pending – thus continuing to enhance its position as the leader in high speed sensing equipment for the global food, beverage, and container industries. PRESS RELEASE: On June 23, 2003, Sidel and Pressco Technology signed a strategic alliance agreement for the distribution and sale of Pressco’s INTELLISPEC™ PET container vision inspection systems. Sidel will become the exclusive distributor of Pressco’s integrated INTELLISPEC system for blow molders in Europe and Asia. This agreement continues an already long-standing collaboration between the two companies. To stress the strategic dimensions of this relationship, Sidel will be participating on Pressco’s Board of Directors. In addition, Sidel investment in Pressco will help to launch a joint R&D program for machine vision and intelligent sensing technologies for Sidel’s core businesses. Pressco’s vision systems use cameras mounted on blowing equipment for on-line inspection of PET preforms and containers. Images are instantly analyzed to detect any defects (cracks, nicks, impurities, holes, etc.) that occur in the base, seal surface, or sidewall of the container. The results are then correlated to blowing machine components (molds, spindles, and transfer arms) using a patented process monitoring capability developed by Pressco. This state-of-the-art technology is a highly effective tool in ensuring container quality and blowing productivity on liquid food and beverage packaging lines. Furthermore, the ability to correlate defects with various machine components means that the blowing machine’s production process can be monitored to optimize productivity and improve uptime. Sidel is the world’s leading manufacturer of blow-molding machines for PET packages. More than one in every two PET bottles worldwide is made on Sidel equipment. Pressco Technology, a U.S.- based company located in Cleveland, Ohio, is a leading manufacturer of inspection systems to the container and closure industry. A specialist in vision systems and process analysis technologies, Pressco has twenty years of experience in high-speed inspection systems. Today, over 350 Pressco systems have already been installed inside Sidel blowing machines around the world. This strategic agreement will provide customers greater value by leveraging the know how, patents, and products of two industry leaders, today, and into the future. It will strengthen Sidel’s offering in providing its customers machines that produce better quality PET containers at lighter weights and faster production speeds for the lowest possible cost. For additional information, please contact Fritz Awig PRESS RELEASE: Working in conjunction with a major supplier of high-quality preforms, Pressco Technology Inc. has designed and manufactured an inspection system capable of detecting flaws in all critical regions of the preform. Presscos standard PSW3 Inspection System (introduced in 2001) detects manufacturing defects on the seal surface and full sidewall of the preform. Taking advantage of the flexibility of the INTELLISPEC product, five additional inspection modules were added to this new system to ensure other areas of the preform were defect-free: gate, endcap, and 360° of the thread area. Coupled directly to the output of a Husky Injection Molding Machine, the new system includes a sophisticated material handling system that enables inspection of every preform at a rate of approximately 24,000 preforms per hour. Defective preforms are automatically eliminated from the product stream before they reach the customer. Described as "magical" at detecting defects, the Pressco system is the complete solution for demanding customer applications. All new INTELLISPEC machine vision systems are equipped with easy-to-use 3.0 software. With a few simple mouse clicks, operators can access important inspection and process monitoring data, such as overall manufacturing statistics, indicator value graphs, or current inspection parameters while the system continues to inspect every preform. PRESS RELEASE: Pressco has been officially notified by the European Patent Office that our "PET Correlation Patent" is issuing in eight major European countries. This patented technology is an important process monitoring tool for manufacturers of stretch blow formed containers, giving them the ability to correlate defect data with machine components. This information can be used to diagnose equipment and processing problems relating to particular components of the blow molder, such as mold cavity, infeed transfer arm, outfeed transfer arm, and spindle. One plant manager at a U.S. Manufacturing Plant claims that "Presscos correlation feature saves 15 minutes of troubleshooting at least five times each week". Assuming a manufacturing rate of 500 containers per minute, the time savings potential from correlation can increase production output by nearly 2 million containers per year. The patent was originally issued in 1997 (U.S. Patent Number 5,591,462) and covers correlation of the results of any type of an electro-optical inspection to components of a blow forming machine. European Patent Number 0793569 will be announced to the world in the May 29, 2002 publication of the European Patent Bulletin.
